Vedic astrology has its origins in India and dates back to thousands of years ago. It is also known as Jyotish and Vedic comes from the Vedas. Vedas are revered texts of Hinduism. Vedic Astrology is based on these Vedas. Vedic Astrology is also referred to as Jyotish, which in Sanskrit means the Science of Light. It mainly deals with the impact the heavenly bodies have on the life of individuals.

Western Astrology and Vedic Astrology have different systems of tracking the location of planets. The positions of stars or group of stars in Vedic Astrology calculate the actual position of the planets. The western astrology uses the position of the Sun at the spring equinox.

Vedic astrology uses the Nakshatras, birthday charts, position of the planets, the dashas and yogas for understanding the basic traits of a person, prediction of future events as well as taking important decisions in the life of a person.

Nakshatras

There are 27 Nakshatras designated to particular constellations. They have a direct bearing on the life and character of the individual. Nakshatra is decided by the position of Moon at the time of birth of the person.

Birth Chart

It indicates the positions of the planets at the time of birth of the individual. It is an indicator of the future of a person, his basic character and the positive and negative aspects of the person.

Planetary Positions

the destiny of a person is decided by the position of the planets.

Kundalini Yogas

They basically refer to the combinations of the positions of the planets. They are responsible for the happenings of events in the life of a person. TheYogas result from the position, conjunction and regression of the planets in the various houses of the Kundali. They will have both good and bad effects on the person.

Dashas

Dashas indicate the exact time associated with the nine planets. They result in specific influence on the events in the life of a person. They can be either good or bad on the various factors in the horoscope of the individual. It depends on the aspects, zodiac signs, position of planets, the combination of planets in the horoscope of a person.

Astrological Significance of Planets in Vedic Astrology

There are nine planets in Vedic Astrology. They are Sun, Mars, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.  Planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn revolve around the Sun. Moon is the satellite of Earth. It has two nodes, Rahu, And Ketu. Rahu is the North Node while Ketu is the South Node. Each planet has a specific meaning and controls the various aspects of an individual. Each planet has its own energy or gravitational force. This force and the combination of the forces of the planets has an impact on the individual and will decide his actions and future.

The Sun

The Sun is known as the King or ruler of the celestial system. It delivers the energy or power to all the other planets in the system. The whole universe gets its brightness from the Sun. It is indicative of commanding position in the society. It is indicative of the soul of the person. Sun is the ruler of the Leo sign and is very powerful in Aries.

Moon

Moon depicts the Mind of the individual. If Sun is the King, Moon is the Queen of the heavenly system. It acts as the Queen of the system and is indicative of the Mother. It controls the Cancer sign and becomes dominant in The Taurus sign.

Mercury

It represents the prince in the astrological hierarchy. It represents the logical faculty of an individual and helps individuals to comprehend the secrets of astrology and life. The planet also helps individuals to communicate with others. It is indicative of the routine actions and speech. It is the ruler of Gemini and is very powerful in the Virgo Sign.

Venus

Venus is the Queen of the astrological order, and is indicative of love and romance. It is responsible for beauty and relationship of the individual. It is the essential planet for marriage. Finances of an individual are governed by this planet. It is the ruling planet of Taurus and Libra signs and is powerful in Pisces sign.

Mars

It is the warrior and commander of the planetary system. It indicates the aggressive nature of the individual and his ability to rebel against injustice. It makes the individual intolerant and responsive to injustice. Mars is helpful for people in the army, police and doctor. It commands the Aries and Scorpio signs and is more powerful in Capricorn.

Jupiter

It occupies the ministerial position in the heavenly cabinet. It indicates knowledge and perception and represents the Teacher in the life of an individual. For a female, it is the husband or the male partner. It also represents religiousness, the family of the individual. It governs Sagittarius and  Pisces and is dominant in the Cancer sign of the zodiac.

Saturn

It represents common people and is the helper for the planetary system. It indicates the ability to judge the actions of the individual. Saturn also represents the tolerance of the person and is slow in action. It is powerful in Libra and weak in Aries. It governs Capricorn and Aquarius signs.

Rahu

It is the North node of the planet Moon, and is called the Shadow planet or Chaya Grah in Vedic astrology. It is supposed to have only the head of the Demon. Rahu is indicative of materialism and worldly desires and dissatisfaction. It has the characteristics of the planet Saturn. The planet is dominant in Taurus and Gemini and not effective in Scorpio and Sagittarius.

Ketu

It represents the tail of a demon and is the south node of Moon. It has no inclination for earthly ambitions or reputation. The planet has contrarian characteristics of Rahu. It represents spirituality and insight. It indicates past karmic actions and is a depository of previous karmic actions. In character, it has the traits of Mars. It is very powerful in Scorpio and Sagittarius and weak in Taurus and Gemini.
