Top 7 Feng Shui Ideas for Kids Bedroom and Study Areas

Parents are always looking to do what’s best for their children, like kids bedroom. They hear advice from family, friends, and even total strangers. Why not use wisdom from ancient China? Feng shui is a philosophy drawn upon thousands of years of observation and tradition.

It is mainly concerned with the balance of Qi or energy, both positive and negative. This applies to people and places, including families. It is well understood that children need a center, a safe place. They also need security. Why not offer it through their surroundings?

1. Bedroom locations

Where a kids bedroom is located will impact the child’s sense of well-being. According to feng shui principles of individual space, boys should be placed in the north or east bedrooms, and girls should be placed in the south or west bedrooms.

Make sure your children sleep with their heads aimed at their optimal personal directions. To discover which directions these are, consult a professional, or do some serious research.

Try to allow your children to have separate bedrooms, as this is a very personal space for them. Understandably, this is not always possible. Try to get creative and give them private spaces within the shared bedroom in this case.

2. Bed placement and etiquette

Bed placement and etiquette. Once the best bedroom location has been found, it is important to find the bed’s proper place. Since the bedroom is primarily a place for sleeping, the bed is the most important piece of furniture. The child must feel secure and comfortable.

This means that they should be able to see the door from their beds, but they should not have their feet in line with the door, as this is considered horrible luck.

Try to position at least the headboard or one side of the bed against a wall, again for a sense of security. Do not place the mattress under a window or on a wall shared by a bathroom.

3. Clutter and light in the bedroom

Children need space, no matter how big or small they are. If their closets are overflowing and you can’t see the floor anymore, there is a problem. Why? In feng shui, energy must have free flow to work properly. Besides, the physical and spiritual worlds are connected.

That means if the energy has no place to go, it stagnates, and if the physical world is a mess, well, you can imagine what happens to the spiritual side. Enlist your children’s help when cleaning out their space. They must feel like they are a part of the process.

Create three piles: one for the trash, one for charity, and one for keep. Set a timer, so you and your children don’t feel overwhelmed. When the time is up, please don’t leave the piles; do what they are labeled to do. When you can see the floor, clean it. Clean the bed, the closets, and the dressers. Wash the remaining clothes and sheets.

If this is too much to tackle in one day, make it a weekend project. The following weekend, go on a shopping trip with your children for buckets, baskets, or boxes to contain unruly toys and craft materials.

Let them help you decide what goes where. You may even decide to be good role models and tackle your room the living room to show your children how it is done before you invade their space.

Once this has been accomplished, make sure their rooms have plenty of light by day and sufficient darkness by night. Dimmer switches for light fixtures are relatively easy to install.

4. Colors for the bedroom

It is no secret that colors make a significant emotional impact. Feng shui philosophy embraces colors as part of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Some elements, such as fire or water, do not belong in a kids bedroom. Fire evokes passion and energy.

While in small doses, it does wonders for a couple who needs a spark in the romance department, it is not restful; therefore, fire colors, such as bright reds, oranges, or pinks, are not a great idea. On the other hand, the water element seems soothing, but it is not a good element for the kids bedroom.

For one thing, too much of the water element leads to sloth. Items such as fish tanks, fountains, or ponds in the bedroom are believed to aggravate lung conditions.

Water element colors such as dark blues and blacks are not advised. What is left, you may wonder? The earth element, considered to be very calming and stable.

While the colors are not exciting (mostly tans, browns, and light yellows), they have a nurturing effect. Some practitioners are not quite strict and suggest that most pastel color choices are just fine, while truly bright colors are overstimulating. Let your children have a say, and try a compromise that is not too far off their selections if the choices are not in their best interests.

5. Artwork in the Kids Bedroom

Yes, even what you or your children hang up on the walls has an impact. Most feng shui practitioners (and even child psychologists, for that matter) will say that angry, violent, or frightening pictures give off negative energy and should not be displayed.

Make sure that a positive image of you with your child or children is in the room. This is a healthy reminder of your presence. Other artwork that gives off good energy reflects the child’s interests or even their own work.

Take their art seriously; if it is a pretty good attempt, frame it and put it on the wall. The frame doesn’t need to be expensive; it just needs to look nice.

6. Wall of honor in the bedroom

In addition to letting your children give their rooms a personal touch, please encourage them to do their best by making a wall (preferably the south wall) a place to show off accomplishments, hobbies, and pictures of people they look up to.

It could be as small as a bulletin board you hang up for them, or it could be the whole wall. As long as you make it unique for them, that is what matters.

It is a space for them to look at when they are feeling down and need to be reminded of all the good things they have done or feel good and want to be inspired. Again, this is simply a good energy maker.

7. Study area layout

Study area layout. Ideally, the study area should not be inside the kids bedroom; however, most of us do not live in an ideal world. If the study area needs to be in the child’s room, there are some things you can do to optimize the effectiveness of the space while minimizing the disruption of sleep.

First, make sure your child does not have his or her back to the door. In feng shui, this is not a secure place to sit. It is best to have your back to a wall, or better yet, a corner.

Make sure your child does not face a window directly. This makes feng shui and common sense. Who wants to study when you can watch the world.
